Saturdays Are Daddy Days

by Jon Henshaw

Many dads, like myself, have to work Monday through Friday. We only get to see our sons and daughters in the morning before we leave to work, and in the early evening when we come home. Some fathers don’t even get that, especially if they have to travel during the week, or work long hours in the office. That’s why, for many fathers, Saturday is daddy day.

For stay-at-home moms it’s a time to take a break. For fathers it’s a time to reconnect with their children. My daughter knows that when Saturday rolls around, she’ll be going on little adventures with daddy. We almost always go to the local coffee shop. I get a small coffee, and she gets a chocolate milk. We usually sit at a table and just people watch. When she’s ready to go, she says, “last sips,” and then heads for the door.

One of the places we went in the mall was the Apple store. My daughter always likes going to the Apple store, because they have a kids section with computers she can play with. They also have very cool soft round ball-like chairs that she likes to sit on. On the way out, I decided to play with the new iMac, which has a built in video camera. We took this shot using iChat, and then I emailed it to myself — proof of one of our little adventures.

I love my Saturdays with my daughter. Actually, I cherish them. It’s just daughter and daddy time, and it’s different from time spent at home, or with the rest of the family. It’s a time when we can just hang out, and focus on each other. I dread the day when I’ll be uncool, and she won’t want to hang out with me anymore.
