World Breastfeeding Week 2007!

In the previous post I mentioned that I’d be back with a review of the Safe Side video… I will absolutely be doing that but today is such a big day for babies everywhere that I thought I’d postpone the review.

breastfeedingAugust 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week. That’s a huge deal. The goals of this event each year are to promote breastfeeding worldwide in order to create healthier babies, stronger communities, global connections, and a stronger mama-baby-family bond.

The biggest event this year kicks off August 8th at 10am (for whatever zone you’re in). Event planners want to beat the First Guinness World Record for Simultaneous Breastfeeding.

The last time more than 20,000 mothers in more than 400 sites all breastfed simultaneously. A good number to beat. If you want to support this event or sign up to participate visit Breastfeeding World.

This week each year is very important for so many reasons. Here are just some of the positive benefits of breastfeeding offered by La Leche League that you should keep in mind.

Studies show that breastfed babies:

A recent study shows that breastfed babies may experience positive future heart health including fewer incidences of high blood pressure and cholesterol as adults than formula fed babies.

Other benefits include positive bonding between mother and baby, a decreased likelihood for dental caries, and reduced maternal rates of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. One benefit of breastfeeding that people often forget is that the environmental impact of formula is very negative where as breastmilk comes without excess packaging and doesn’t need any factory time. Breastmilk is a very earth-friendly product.
