Top 3 Herbal Remedies For Kids

by Julie Fletcher

Mortar and PestleLast night I was reading a new article on herbal remedies and children. Parents are giving their children herbs, which in itself is a great thing. Complimentary and Alternative Medicine has gained quite a bit of a following. In the past decade science has proven what countless people have known for centuries- plant and food based medicines work. Often better than chemical based medicines.

What does this mean for us laymen? Should we go to the local herb shop and buy as many bottles or teas as possible? Absolutely not. Herbal remedies have the same chance of drug interaction or adverse reaction as what we have come to know as traditional medication. Chamomile, for instance, can cause allergic reactions in those who are allergic to the ragweed family. Garlic has properties that reduce blood clotting, so it should not be used if you already take a blood thinner.

Those are only two examples of allergy and interaction issues. Many more have been reported and there will definitely be others discovered. Using herbs with your children should be a learning process. Learn before using! Process the information carefully!

Three of the very best food or herbal remedies for use with children and infants are:

Chamomile- Stressed children may find relief with a relaxing mug of tea. Colicky infants can be soothed with one to two ounces of room temperature tea. Sleep problems might also be eased in children aged one and up. As mentioned above, this tea should not be used in anyone who has a ragweed or daisy family allergy. Watch your child closely after the first use for symptoms of a reaction.

Garlic- This bulb has been known for centuries as a veritable cure all. The cleansing and anti-viral properties are backed by modern science. Garlic can be used on a daily basis in those with no allergies to it and who will not be taken g blood thinner medication for any reason.

Omega3’s- Omega 3 Fatty Acids are found in fish and in nuts. Flax seeds are well known for containing this. For kids who hate the taste of fish, try ground flaxseed in bake mix items like muffins. Muffins and cupcakes can hide a ton of things you want your children to eat!

If you decide to use herbs, remember that different brands of purchased pills or capsules can contain differing amounts of the compounds that make an herb work. Standardized items are monitored by the producing company for this. When shopping for an herb, do research on the best and most consistent brand(s). Talk to experts if possible. Always check for possible interaction and reactions! Never start with an adult dosage for children under the age of 12 years.

If you begin using herbal remedies, talk with your child’s doctor. Many more physicians are realizing that the population have embraced alternative therapies. Schools of Medicine offer courses to their students on these therapies, so it is a good bet your doctor will be informed on your choices. He or she may be able to let you know if an herb or food will interact with any medicine prescribed and help you choose methods of incorporating herbs into your health routine. Never forget to tell your doctor about all herbs, vitamins, or teas you are using!
