Key Elements In Sports Nutrition

By: FamilyResource.com

The intake of adequate nutrition is an integral part of maintaining an active lifestyle. When sports become a part of your life, it is crucial that your nutritional habits change accordingly. By adopting proper sports nutrition, you are giving yourself the gift of an easier workout and a more balanced diet.

People pursue an active lifestyle, including competitive and noncompetitive sports, for a number of reasons. First and possibly foremost is health. People who exercise on a daily or even weekly basis enjoy lower body fat, lower cholesterol, increased longevity and overall an increased level of happiness.

One of the key elements of sports nutrition is increasing carbohydrate intake, while lowering fat intake. Carbohydrates are the human body's primary source of energy, and are the best way to make sure that you don't flag during your work out.

Hydration can become a problem if you are in exercising. Maintaining a high water-level intake throughout the day is a good way to make sure that your nutrition stays at a healthy level. By adding electrolytes, or drinking an electrolytic drink such as Gatorade, you can add to your body's ability to keep itself hydrated.

Other suggestions include lowering your cholesterol intake while raising the amount of fiber you eat. Some people add a fiber supplement to meals, such as cereal in the morning or a smoothie in the afternoon.

Developing proper nutrition for sports and other activities is similar to developing your normal nutrition, but more important. No matter what level of activity you are at, however, eating leafy green vegetables, avoiding an excess of meat — especially red meat — and also trans fats that can be found in hydrogenated oils (stay away from fast food) are all part of a package of nutrition that can make your sporting life better, faster and more enjoyable.

As when developing any new activity or diet, always consult a physician.
