Popular Baby Names
One of the biggest challenges for new parents is coming up with a name for their baby. Some parents prefer to take the easier and more politically friendly route, by passing on family names. However, for many parents it can be a daunting task. Especially if a name seems either out-of-date, or has taken on a new meaning in our current culture. For example, names like Gay, Gertrude and Claude probably aren’t the most appealing names to give your child (although I’ll leave that judgment up to you).
There are parents that prefer to be creative when naming their child. For example, some name their children after nature, like Ocean and Summer. In fact, there seems to be an unlimited approach to naming one’s child. Some different naming approaches include patriotic naming (George Washington), ethnic naming, and even making up names from scratch!
For those who are less inclined to make up names, or use familial names, there is a helpful site created (surprisingly) by the Social Security Administration, called Popular Baby Names. Popular Baby Names has some very neat features. It allows new parents to search for popular names in the United States based on the following criteria:
- Most popular names by year of birth
- Top names by state
- Top 1000 names for each decade from 1900-1990
- How the popularity of a particular name has changed over the years
Parents will not only find this site helpful, they will also find it extremely interesting. In the end though, if you can’t find the baby name you’re looking for, there’s plenty of other Web sites on the Internet that can assist you.
