Marriage Counseling

What Is Marriage Counseling?

Couples go to marriage counselors for many reasons. Sometimes couples need help resolving issues that they can't resolve on their own, and other times they just want to learn how to be more intimate. Marriage counseling is designed to address both minor and major issues experienced by married couples.

All marriage counselors have their own style of counseling. Some marriage counselors are very direct, while others prefer to do more listening, and encourage the couple to solve the problem on their own.

When looking for a marriage counselor, it's important to ask the marriage counselor about their style of counseling. They should be willing to tell you over the phone their approach to marriage counseling. If their approach doesn't feel right, you should look for another marriage counselor.

Effective marriage counseling usually involves couples being as open and honest as possible. The more the marriage counselor can know about your situation, the more they can help you. Marriage counselors will often use in-session relationship building techniques, and will also provide homework that's designed to improve how you relate to your spouse.

How Much Does Marriage Counseling Cost?

The cost of marriage counseling depends on who you get your counseling from. For example, if you go to a seasoned marriage counselor (practicing for over 10 years), they may charge you over $100/hour, and may not accept insurance. However, if you go to a less seasoned counselor, they will often charge less than $100/hour, and will probably accept insurance.

Couples can also seek out marriage counseling at their church, synagogue, or community center. They usually charge a very low fee ($5-$20/hour) or nothing at all. Another resource is local colleges that have counseling programs. They often have counseling centers where their students train, and will provide marriage counseling at a very low fee.

Where Can I Find A Marriage Counselor?

The absolute best way to find a marriage counselor is through a personal referral. Although it may feel uncomfortable, try asking friends and/or family for a marriage counselor reference.

Another way to find a marriage counselor is the Internet. The Internet has several services that can help you find a marriage counselor in your area. Below are a few online resources that can help you find a marriage counselor.
