{"id":390,"date":"2006-08-01T11:14:45","date_gmt":"2006-08-01T17:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/?p=390"},"modified":"2006-08-01T11:17:22","modified_gmt":"2006-08-01T17:17:22","slug":"thank-goodness-for-starbucks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/01\/thank-goodness-for-starbucks\/","title":{"rendered":"Thank Goodness for Starbucks&#8230;.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you&#8217;re feeling tired and overworked and, maybe, even a little cheated in life &#8211; go to Starbucks.\u00a0 It was just the happy reality check that I needed.<\/p>\n<p>I had a meeting there this morning and got there early enough to eavesdrop on quite a few delectable conversations.\u00a0 There are a lot of days, most parents will agree, when I gaze with envy upon those singles that have more free time than they know what to do with.\u00a0 They read magazines.\u00a0 They download great, new music into their iPods.\u00a0 They go out for drinks and movies.\u00a0 They sit in weird places like Starbucks for hours on end\u00a0and talk about their &#8220;problems&#8221;.\u00a0 From the outside it looks luscious.\u00a0 Today, though, I got the inside scoop, courtesy of Starbucks and it wasn&#8217;t pretty.<\/p>\n<p>While I sat there, prior to eavesdropping, the initial illusion of sweet solitude and calm reverie was there.\u00a0 But then I started to pay attention to conversations floating around the room..\u00a0What is with single, young\u00a0people creating conflict in their lives?\u00a0 Do they not see how simple things are?\u00a0 I suppose they feel as though life is more interesting if it is more complicated.\u00a0 Maybe I was that way, too, when I was young &#8211; I doubt it, but it&#8217;s possible.\u00a0 Thank god for perspective, right?\u00a0 The lady next to me was in a verbal fist fight on the phone with the DMV, trying to find out how to change the picture on her driver&#8217;s license &#8211; I kid you not&#8230;\u00a0The poor thing was almost in tears.\u00a0 The\u00a0maybe-nineteen year old girl next to <em>her<\/em> was on <em>her<\/em> phone saying something to the effect of &#8220;how dare he say I spend too much of his money &#8211; I earn that sh#!&#8221;.\u00a0 Wow. \u00a0I mean, how important is the picture on your driver&#8217;s license\u00a0when you&#8217;ve babies to\u00a0feed, butts to wipe, bills to pay and dinner to cook?\u00a0 And damn if there has never been a day when I had the luxery of complaining about spending someone else&#8217;s money.\u00a0 I barely have my own money to spend, much less someone else&#8217;s.\u00a0 I just had one of\u00a0those moments this morning where I felt delightfully out of place.\u00a0 My hair was a mess, my shirt had a hole in it from my daughter tugging on it too much, my jeans were &#8220;sort of&#8221; clean, I had a to-do list that would probably make\u00a0everyone else in that place shutter with exhaustion and it felt <strong>good<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0So, I say, thank goodness for Starbucks &#8211; a place where\u00a0tired parents can\u00a0realize they are changing the world for the better simply because we are not contributing to the world where Starbucks, indeed, matters.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you&#8217;re feeling tired and overworked and, maybe, even a little cheated in life &#8211; go to Starbucks.\u00a0 It was just the happy reality check that I needed.
