{"id":402,"date":"2006-08-21T15:17:55","date_gmt":"2006-08-21T21:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/?p=402"},"modified":"2006-08-21T15:17:55","modified_gmt":"2006-08-21T21:17:55","slug":"snub-scouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/21\/snub-scouts\/","title":{"rendered":"Snub Scouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cub Scouts have started recruiting at my child&#8217;s school.\u00a0I am not sure what to make of it.\u00a0 I feel as if I have to take his post-brainwashing session postcard, inviting him to be part of the &#8220;fun&#8221;\u00a0and burn it.\u00a0 They are invading his school in a very communistic stlye propaganda type way that frightens me&#8230;. all this talk about team work and god and working for the &#8220;pack&#8221;.\u00a0 hmph.\u00a0 This is the part of me that doesn&#8217;t work well with being a mother &#8211; damn my inherent nonconformist thread.\u00a0 I promise I have tried to shake it all my life (sort of)\u00a0&#8211; to be aprt of a group of people who seem really happy teaming up against the world &#8211; but the reality is it all scares me silly.\u00a0 And I decided several years ago that anyone using god as a front will eventually find a way to exclude others who aren&#8217;t of the same ilk from the group.\u00a0 Case in point:\u00a0 gay troop leader who had devoted most of his life to boyscouting getting kicked out as a leader because it was discovered he was gay.\u00a0 Pardon me for being skeptical and for not forgiving and fogetting, but that right there is a big point against scouting for me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But my son is so excited about it.\u00a0 It has been all he has talked about for days.\u00a0 Dilemma.\u00a0 Do I swallow my &#8220;issues&#8221; and let him figure out if that is the life for him?\u00a0 Do I protest because it is an institution that, several years ago, projected utterly blantant discrimination toward a group of people that make up the majority of the people my son and I know and love.\u00a0 What does a good parent do in this situation?\u00a0Really I don&#8217;t mean to get political &#8211; I am just having a bit of a quagmire here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I guess the thing to do is take him to the meeting myself and ask a lot of questions and see what it&#8217;s all about before I cast judgement.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to be discriminatory, even toward a discriminating institution.\u00a0 I will focus on the people involved here and not the institution itself &#8211; because, if I have learned anything in my miniscule thirty years on this planet, it is that an institutions beliefs have little to nothing to do with that of the majority of its members.\u00a0 Geez, maybe I should just turn off my overly-analytical switch and let my kid be a kid.\u00a0 For goodness sakes, it&#8217;s just the cubscouts.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just making pinewood derby cars and camping and fishing.\u00a0Right?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cub Scouts have started recruiting at my child&#8217;s school.\u00a0I am not sure what to make of it.\u00a0 I feel as if I have to take his post-brainwashing session postcard, inviting him to be&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[59,64,109],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-402","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-daily-living","category-mental-environment","category-social-justice"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/402","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=402"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/402\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=402"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=402"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=402"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
