{"id":60,"date":"2004-07-20T02:06:42","date_gmt":"2004-07-20T08:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/?p=60"},"modified":"2004-07-20T02:06:42","modified_gmt":"2004-07-20T08:06:42","slug":"starting-high-school-later-helps-teens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familyresource.com\/blog\/2004\/07\/20\/starting-high-school-later-helps-teens\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting high school later helps teens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jacquelyn Cole in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scripps.com\/\">Scripps Howard Foundation Wire<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In studies of adolescent sleep patterns, Dr. Mary Carskadon of Brown University in Providence, R.I., found that melatonin, a hormone that controls sleep patterns, is released later during adolescence, making adhering to an early bedtime biologically difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Splaingard said, &#8220;In a perfect world, they wouldn&#8217;t have to wake up until 9 or 10 a.m.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wilton&#8217;s initiative to change school hours began with its League of Women Voters.<\/p>\n<p>Carole Kleinfeld, Zack&#8217;s mother and league vice president, said the issue was important to the parents because they saw how tired their children were.<\/p>\n<p>For eight months, members talked to students, teachers, coaches, principals and sleep experts.
