Important Infant Cold Medication Recall

Last month, U.S. health officials had advised that the warning ‘Consult your physician’ be removed from infant cold medications and place instead the warning to not use the medicines in children under 2 years of age.

The problem comes not from the medication itself, but from unintentional overdosing. Parents may lose the dropper that came with the medication, then try to estimate the dose with droppers from other medications or with the tiny measuring cups on other cold medicines. This has led to around 50 death in the past 40 years.

The companies who make the medications are putting forth a voluntary recall. The recall does not affect cold medicines targeted to children aged 2 and up.
